After an undefeated year in the top section of the Benalla/Euroa competition in 2016/17, the competition requested Avenel Tennis Club be split into two teams so the big towns’ teams had a fighting chance.
Split it did and while one team just missed finals, the other team continued to drop another trophy and flag into the glory box. Five grand finals in five years is icing on the cake for a club that enjoys its tennis and the families that have embraced the club.
The rise of the junior boys’ teams, who had two teams play off in the section 1 Grand Final of the Broadford junior competition again emphasises the strength and the lineage that will ensure Avenel TC stays dominant even when the old boys are long gone.
Be prepared for the new breed of brothers — Bath, Garner, and Murray — and throw in a Robinson and a Mawson and it’s like Avenel got the first eight picks in the draft.
Like all tennis clubs the female ranks are a little lighter, however Mr Bath hates missing finals and one believes he has begun to recruit for the 18/19 season already.
In all another successful season for tennis and for Avenel TC.
