Exciting academy selection for young talent

A string of up-and-coming football players from Seymour are in the 2018 Tatura Milk AFL Goulburn Murray Youth Development Academy.

St Mary’s Junior Football Club is well represented with Sam Thomson in the U13 squad, Jack Davey, Alex Elliot and Nicholas Quigg are in the U14 squad, with Darcy Gleeson making the U15 squad.

Codie Kipping, from the Seymour Lions, was also picked for the U15 squad.

With training bases at Kialla, Princess Park, Rochester and Echuca, the academy continues to evolve, providing a point of difference training to the elite juniors in the region.

AFL Goulburn Murray football development manager Trevor Mellington was excited by the talent which will be on display in this year’s program.

‘‘The 2018 academy coaches have combined to spend countless hours scouring the entire Goulburn Murray region identifying the best talent to be invited to this year’s program,’’ he said.

‘‘Performances at all of club, inter league, finals, lightning premierships and other representative competitions were considered to finalise the eventual academy list.’’

‘‘We all recognise that selection processes are never an exact science.

‘‘However, our coaches have done an outstanding job at trying to sift through all of the available data and observations to put together lists which they believe best reflect the depth and breadth of talent across the whole of the Goulburn Murray.’’

The program starts the week of February 19, with the parent induction program and some testing procedures by the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers TAC cup high performance staff.
