Avenel’s C-grade team let a five-goal second-quarter lead slip to go down to Murchison-Toolamba by six goals in their elimination final on Saturday.

The teams were in a five-goal deadlock at quarter-time before the Swans shot away to a five-goal lead early in the second term.

But the in-form Murchison-Toolamba rallied and scored 13 goals to Avenel’s nine for the term to close the gap and take a four-goal lead into half-time.

Down but not out, Avenel came back stronger in the third quarter, determined not to let its season slide.

Avenel outscored Murchison-Toolamba 13-11 in the third term to trail by two goals at the final change, setting up a nail-biting final-quarter.

But Murchison-Toolamba proved too strong for the Swans, shooting 12-8 in the final term to secure a 41-35 win and a spot in the first semi-final on Sunday, while the Swans’ C-grade season is over.

Going forward

Avenel’s A-grade and B-grade teams enjoyed the week off after finishing second and first on the ladder respectively.

Both sides will play a semi-final at Stanhope on Saturday, with a win sending them straight through to the season decider, while a loss will mean a second chance in the following week’s preliminary final.

A-grade plays Nagambie, while B-grade will play Merrigum.
