Perfect start continues

June 09, 2017

Charley White takes possession through the midcourt in the C-grade match.

Tegan Sidebottom looks to deliver in to the goal ring.

Sarah Milne flies high to take the intercept in defence.

C-grade defender Maddi Cudmore gets her fingers to the ball to intercept the pass in Longwood’s goal ring.

Annika Sutherland gets some close attention from her Longwood opponent in the C-grade game.

Erin Engel puts a stop to the pass between Longwood’s goalers.

Avenel’s A-grade side has continued its perfect start to the season with another win, this time against Longwood.

The Swans came away with a 48-goal win, but the Redlegs were honourable opponents.

‘‘The game was quite even in some of the court play and I think Longwood has recruited well,’’ Avenel coach Tegan Hansen said.

‘‘They played well, it was just we got the score on the board.’’

The luxury of not having to field an under-17 side for the week meant some Swans were given the chance to make their A-grade debut.

Dakota Griffiths came in for her first game and stepped up beautifully.

B-grade player Gen Gordon played a half in A-grade, while premiership star Kate Bishop also made an appearance, shooting alongside Tegan Sidebottom.

It was a new-look but experienced side, which executed Hansen’s game plan well.

Hansen was pleased with the way the team adapted.

‘‘We’re really showing our flexibility and versatility in our team. We’re still working on getting our structures right and working out what rotations work out best for us,’’ Hansen said.

Sidebottom was the Swans’ sharpshooter in front of goal, while Mackenzie Garner continued her run of good form.

Next week Avenel takes on Undera, which came close to Nagambie on Saturday.

‘‘Undera has had a few wins this season and they’ll be one to watch, so we’ll be training hard on Thursday night,’’ Hansen said.

‘‘We plan to just put our team on the court, stick to our game plan and if we don’t win we reflect and work out where we can make improvements.’’

Score: Avenel 68 d Longwood 20

Awards: Mackenzie Garner, Tegan Sidebottom.

Consistency is a core strength of the Swans’ B-grade outfit.

Shooting 20 goals a quarter, Avenel proved it’s a sharp shot in front of goal.

Good defensive pressure across the court forced turnovers and more often than not resulted in goals. The Swans showed great discipline to stick to the game plans.

Avenel also has a lot of depth. The side’s ability to rotate players only to replace them with a player of equal value is impressive.

Sarah Brown was unstoppable in goal, while Gen Gordon was smart with her ball-handling and placement.

Score: Avenel 83 d Longwood 13

Awards: Sarah Brown, Gen Gordon.

The girls played a great game to come away with a 44-goal victory.

Defenders Maddie Milne and Maddi Cudmore were fantastic, keeping the Redlegs to just 16 goals.

Annika Sutherland and Charley White goaled brilliantly to score 50 goals between them and put into play the things the side has been working on at training. A special thanks goes to under-17 players Maggie McDonald and Dakota Griffiths for filling in and playing brilliantly as well.

Score: Avenel 50 d Longwood 16
